How much are storytellers' professional fees?

The Storytellers of Canada-Conteurs du Canada say:

  • A minimum of $250 for a performance up to one hour should be the basis upon which a professional storyteller negotiates his/her fee.
  • For workshops, a minimum of $250 per hour is recommended.
  • If the teller wishes to work for a fee lower than this due to personal or community considerations, he/she has an obligation to inform the presenter that the above is the recognized fee for the service.

The Ottawa StoryTellers say:

  • $125.00 to $350 per hour or part of an hour
  • $250.00 to $450 for half day (usually two sessions or a workshop)
  • $400.00 to $750 for a full day (usually three sessions or two workshops)
  • Depending upon distances, tellers usually charge $0.35 to $0.45 per km if they need to travel more than 25 kilometers.
  •  Some tellers are willing to "donate a part, or all, of their fee back to the cause."
  •  In this case the teller would identify their full fee and state that "x" amount would be a donation.
